She graduated from Aurora High School in 1967. Velma began her career with Wachovia Bank in Aurora and later started her own domestic cleaning business. Velma was sought after by many to administer to their domestic needs and she did so for as long as her health allowed. She was a founding member of the Aurora Junior Women's Club and worked diligently to support all of their activities. She played softball in the Aurora league and was quite an athlete. Velma was a member of the South Creek Missionary Baptist Church from early childhood and recently reconnected with members at their homecoming this past May. She loved vegetable and flower gardening, spending time at the local river basking in the sun, and enjoyed spending time with her good friends. Velma always had a smile, a bubbly laugh and a joke to share with everyone, she never met a stranger. She will be sorely missed by her many friends and family members.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her daughter: Michelle Leigh Coe, (Bobby Wiggs) of Jacksonville, NC; Dennis "Tiny" Mills, life partner of the home, two sisters: Doris Deal Snell (Bill) of Picayune, Mississippi; Betty Deal Sandow (Sammy) of Washington, NC; brother Earl E. My sweet friend of 46 years. I will miss you always. You were apart of my life and my children who called you Aunt Velma. You were here for every birthday for Miracle and Hunter, Miracles high school graduation, thru Michaels cancer treatment. We talked everyday and sang to each other on every phone call. My heart is broken and that part will never leave me. I love you my friend and I will miss you every day.
