Susan Elizabeth Oakley was born on September 14th, 1957, to Thomas Oakley Jr. & Marta Martin of Vienna VA. Soon after graduating from James Madison High School (Vienna, VA - 1975), Susan married and began building her family while continuing to further her education by attending night school. She began her professional career at Freddie Mac in Tysons Corner VA in 1992. There she was promoted through a variety of positions across a successful career of 25 years, until she retired as Director of Quality Control Processing in 2017. During her career she was a wise council and mentor to her team and anyone fortunate enough to have worked with her. Upon retirement Susan and her family moved to Washington, NC. and purchased her dream home in the historic waterfront district, quickly making many friends that truly made the house and neighborhood her home.
During her life she loved to travel and had many wonderful vacations with her family to Rehoboth Beach, Maryland and Hiawassee, Georgia. Collecting seashells while walking on the beach was one of her lifelong passions. She traveled extensively with Thomas Lloyd her longtime partner and good friends Debbie & Daniel to many places in Europe, and across the United States. Susan loved gardening, painting, good food, and wine. She also loved photography and constantly had a camera in her hands. Not surprisingly she has taken some amazing pictures through the years and her family has dozens (maybe hundreds) of albums to cherish.
When you became a friend of Susan’s you become a friend for life, no matter how long you knew her, she made a profound impact on your life. She will be remembered for her compassion, kindness, and her generosity. Known as “Nina and Dee-Dee” to those she cherished most, spending time with her grandchildren was possibly the greatest joy in her life.
Susan battled breast cancer in early 2018 but ultimately succumbed after a strong fight with liver cancer on November 13th, 2023. She was supported by her family & longtime friends who rallied around her. She is survived by her three daughters Christina Rose of Washington NC, Cadee (Randy) of Richmond VA and Maggie of Pinetown NC, her four grandchildren Callie, Gabriel, William & London, and her two beloved Shih Tzus Ringo & Rue. She is also survived by her stepdaughters Jackie Lloyd and Terri (Walter) Kroptavich of Manassas VA & Allie (Billy) Dongoski of Winchester VA. She is preceded in death by her grandparents Thomas “Dee” Oakley & Susie Berrong, parents Thomas Oakley Jr. and Marta Martin, as well as her brothers Todd & Ricky Oakley.
