On Thursday, October 10, 2019, Lucy Pake passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving husband, adored children and cherished grandchildren. Lucy always had such a loving spirit and an unending energy that her family thought could never end. Though her friends and family wished her to stay, Death called her home. Lucy's favorite poet Emily Dickinson, who she lovingly coined "Cousin" Emily, penned, "Because I could not stop for Death, he kindly stopped for me."
Lucy was born on June 2, 1948 to Junius and Gladys Scoggin of Bassett, Virginia. She was the apple of her daddy's eye, and her mother was so proud of the little girl "she had all by herself." After leaving home to attend East Carolina University, she caught the eye of Chris Pake in June of 1967, who became her husband in August. They began their life together as they studied to become teachers, and held various jobs to reach their goals. Lucy lovingly recounted a story of listening to Chris on the radio and calling in with a fake accent to request her favorite tunes. Lucy's sarcastic wit, sharp intellect and fun-loving spirit made her an excellent teacher. She was loved by students and staff at ECU and Campbell University over her career. She spread her joy for the English language and literature among the young people she touched each year.
A large family was Lucy's biggest dream, and she was blessed with four children. The Pake family home was full of smiles and laughter as the neighborhood children would flock to the busy house to be a part of the fun. The children and their friends have many fun memories as they enjoyed time with "Big Chris" and "Lucy Love." As a testament to her example and passion for life, all four of her children have chosen careers in education or coaching. She is survived by her daughter, Leighann, and her husband, Anthony; her daughter, Daryn, and her husband, Tim; her son, Scott, and his wife, Emily; and her son, Spencer, and his wife, Shannon.
Though she was an awesome mom, she was an even prouder grandmother. She adored her ten grandchildren and was happy to pull out pictures to show anyone who would look. She loved to cheer at sporting events, and attended her fair share of dance recitals. Her grandchildren are Savannah, Tristan, Meghan, Cayden, Trey, Elli, Morgan, Anna Brey, Henley, and Hayley.
Lucy was a loving wife, caring mother and doting grandmother, but she still had room in her heart for her fur babies. She loved her dogs and cats, and they were more than pets—they were FAMILY!
Her hobbies included reading, completing crossword puzzles, cross-stitching, and sun-bathing. It was not unusual to find her in the sun on a cool March day, as long as the sun was shining bright. She loved the sand beneath her toes, the river gently rocking her boat, and the peaceful quiet of her backyard pool.
Lucy's family will continue to move forward—one foot in front of the other. There may be a few stumbles back, but their love and faith will keep them going. Memories of Lucy belting her favorite songs, "Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox," or "John Deere Green" will always bring a smile. Lucy will be remembered for her loving, free spirit. The words to Jimmy Buffett's "A Pirate Looks at 40" spoke to her soul, and will bring comfort to her loved ones.

Mother, Mother Ocean, I have heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall
You've seen it all, you've seen it all.
Watched the men who rode you switch from sails to steam
And in your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen
Most of them dream, most of them dream.

Lucy did so much more than dream. She lived!

It has been many years since my former husband, Billy O'Neal, our children, Kelly & Stuart & the Pake children sat around the dinner table. It was always fun.
