Kent Phillips

February 29, 1940 - June 30, 2023
Kent Phillips
Kent Phillips, a man with a zest for life, bid us farewell on June 30, 2023, at the age of 83. Born February 29, 1940, in Halifax County, NC, Kent embraced each day with a spirit that defied his numerical age.

Kent's journey was as colorful as the skies he once soared through. After serving as a Second Lieutenant at Homestead Airforce Base in Florida, he tried his hand at farming in Scotland Neck, proving that even the land couldn't resist his charm. Later, Kent became an insurance adjuster in Raleigh, expertly navigating the twists and turns of life's unpredictability.

Not one to be grounded for long, Kent took to the friendly skies as a pilot for Allegheny Airlines in Hagerstown, Maryland. With the wind beneath his wings, he then transitioned into airport management and served as an Aviation Inspector with the FAA, ensuring that others could safely chase their own dreams among the clouds. To top it off, Kent also had the privilege of flying the Dare County EMJ Helicopter, always reaching new heights in his career.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Kent had a wide range of interests. He was an avid supporter of UNC sports, cheering on his beloved Tar Heels with unwavering enthusiasm. Beach music set his toes tapping, and he could often be found searching for new tunes to add to his ever-growing collection. Computers fascinated him, and he eagerly explored the countless possibilities they offered. With an appreciation for history, he reveled in visiting historical sites, finding solace in the echoes of the past.

Kent's life was undoubtedly enriched by the people who shared in his adventures. He proudly served in ROTC and was a member of the esteemed Prime Timers Team at his church. But it was the incredible love and companionship he found in his sixty years of marriage that truly defined him. Kent leaves behind his devoted wife, Dukette Phillips, and his two wonderful daughters, Dana and Kristin Phillips, who carry his spirit forward.

Kent is preceded in death by his mother, Lena Bell-Phillips, his father, Robert Lee Phillips, his sister, Bonnie Sue Phillips-Broadwell, and his brother, Eddie Dean. Though they have left this earthly plane, their influence and love continue to resonate in Kent's heart.

To celebrate Kent's remarkable life and the indelible mark he left on our hearts, a gathering will be held on Sunday, July 2, at 2:00 pm. Family and friends are invited to join us as we honor Kent's memory. Following the Celebration of Life, there will be a visitation at the same location from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

In remembrance of Kent, let us treasure the laughter he brought, the dreams he encouraged, and the joy he shared. May his spirit forever soar, touching the lives of all those fortunate enough to have known him.

Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service is honored to assist the Phillips family.
