Commander George Wayne Millard age 87, a resident of 535 Foreman Lane, Belhaven, NC passed away Friday, July 20, 2018 peacefully at his home after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at the request of Commander Millard at his residence in Belhaven, NC at 3:00 PM Saturday, August 4, 2018.
He graduated from Allentown, PA High School in 1948. George enlisted into the Navy.after graduation in October 1948. He attended basic training at Great Lakes and trained as a Navy Corpsman. Commander Millard served his country in the U.S. Navy hospital field for 29 years at Bethesda Naval Hospital where he was selected for officer status and also serving on three aircraft carriers: the USS Leyte CVA 32, USS Bennington CVA 20 and USS Shangri-la CVA 38. After sea duty he served at Newport Naval Hospital then the Bureau of Medicine in Washington, DC and Quantico Medical Hospital. He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital as Administrator. Upon his retirement in 1977 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. After his retirement he became a hospital administrator in Broward County, Florida before eventually retiring to reside in Belhaven, NC in 1990.
Commander Millard is survived by two sons: Wayne Thomas, Michael Patrick; four daughters: Kathryn Mary, Linda Marie, Elizabeth Ann, Carol Eileen: sister: Mary Louise Miller; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years and mother of his children Mary Catherine Gaughan Millard.
